Andrew is Behavioural Ecologist conducting research in the field of social behaviour. His research group – SHOAL – study a variety of group-living fish, birds, and mammals in the lab and in the wild. Andrew is most well-known for his work investigating the evolution and ecology of leadership. Andrew has previously worked at The Zoological Society of London, University College London, The Royal Veterinary College, the University of Cambridge, the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin, and the University of Cape Town in South Africa. Since 2012 Andrew and his research group are based at Swansea University, Wales, where he is an Associate Professor. You can learn more about his research at www.SHOALgroup.org and follow him on Twitter @SHOALgroup.
I will give an overview of the research my team conducts on the social behaviour of animals and how this relates to key themes and challenges in Swarm Robotics. I will explain how technological advances are providing us with the opportunity to quantify and model the heterogeneity that exists within the groups we study, and within the environments in which these groups live. In doing so, I will allow the audience to choose which research they would like to learn about in real-time, with options ranging from studies of fish, birds, ungulates, and primates (including people).
